Redfin, one of my favorite online brokerages recently posted some interesting data that answers the question:

What is the true benefit of listing your home with professional photography?

Their findings are based off camera EXIF data embedded in the images uploaded to the MLS. They looked for all the listings that were shot with a DSLR camera – the type of camera almost always used by a professional photographer – and compared those listings to those remaining.

So is it worth it to hire a professional real estate photographer?  The results seem to speak for themselves.

Listings shot with a DSLR:

  • Receive an average of 61% more views than their peers across all price tiers.
  • Have a 47% higher asking price per square foot.
  • Have an increased likelihood of selling for homes priced above $300,000.

The DSLR Advantage

So what does this mean for someone trying to sell their home?

Ultimately homes listed with professional photography sell for a higher price. Professional real estate photography substantially increases the likelihood that a potential buyer will click through to view your listing and drives more buyers to tour your home. In the end, the more people interested in your house, the better your chance of receiving an attractive offer, and the better your odds of selling your home for more money.
